Summary

I am continually amazed at how people found hope and light in the face of absolute evil。 This is a beautiful story that mixes facts and fills in with fiction。

Aimee

The story itself is lovely。 However, the duplication of stories within the book made it hard to follow at times。

One of the most impactful books I have ever read。 The horror of what human endured balanced with beauty。 Very moving。

A novel based on the life of Dita Kraus, sent to Auschwitz as a child, became the secret guardian of the few books smuggled in。 It is simultaneously horrifying and inspiring, always grounded in grim reality。 As gripping as the story is。 What will stay with me most deeply is the after-story of the author's years of getting to know the elderly, still determined, clear-eyed and strong。 I will remember this book。 A novel based on the life of Dita Kraus, sent to Auschwitz as a child, became the secret guardian of the few books smuggled in。 It is simultaneously horrifying and inspiring, always grounded in grim reality。 As gripping as the story is。 What will stay with me most deeply is the after-story of the author's years of getting to know the elderly, still determined, clear-eyed and strong。 I will remember this book。 。。。more

A fascinating book, with much the same information and protagonists as "I Escaped From Aushwitz," which I had just finished。 A fascinating book, with much the same information and protagonists as "I Escaped From Aushwitz," which I had just finished。 。。。more

There are many far better novels about the Holocaust available。 I’ve read extensively in this genre and The Librarian of Auschwitz did not impress me。 In short, too many liberties were made with the story, the historical characters, and accuracy of life in the camps。 As a young adult novel, disregarding the historical issues, it reads well and I can see why it engages readers。 I hope the author writes more novels, but I also hope he sticks with straight fiction, so the history doesn’t get muddle There are many far better novels about the Holocaust available。 I’ve read extensively in this genre and The Librarian of Auschwitz did not impress me。 In short, too many liberties were made with the story, the historical characters, and accuracy of life in the camps。 As a young adult novel, disregarding the historical issues, it reads well and I can see why it engages readers。 I hope the author writes more novels, but I also hope he sticks with straight fiction, so the history doesn’t get muddled。 Usually it’s a good thing when a book inspires me to do more research。 In this case, the inspiration came from a concern that the story was way off course - and everything I found, including interviews with the real Dita - confirmed my suspicions。 Dita was very kind in all her criticisms, but there were many crucial ways this book veers from history - first being, the books were never hidden, always on display (according to Dita)。 There was no clandestine library。 There was no hidden pocket。 This book is 90% fiction that uses real names。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 i felt it was a bit too slow paced at the start and middle, but definitely picked up at the end。 i felt there was too much switching povs in the chapters。 also there were many side characters who got a lot of attention put on them who i felt weren’t even the most important side characters (definitely wanted a chapter from mengeles pov)。 but i appreciated reading a book about a fellow reading who lived during the holocaust, so i overall did enjoy it!

This was better than I would have expected。 So good it kept me up at night reading well into the night。

Apart from being incredibly sad, this book shows the reality of the WWII and how it affected so many people。We all have studied the WWI and WWII and all the outcomes of that, but how much do we know about the feelings of the people trapped inside whose joys of a life were delayed by the Holocaust? It´s a really heartbreaking story about a girl, Dita, who lost her parents in the concentration camp and a lot more people (older people, kids, babies。。。) despite that, she found a life purpose with the Apart from being incredibly sad, this book shows the reality of the WWII and how it affected so many people。We all have studied the WWI and WWII and all the outcomes of that, but how much do we know about the feelings of the people trapped inside whose joys of a life were delayed by the Holocaust? It´s a really heartbreaking story about a girl, Dita, who lost her parents in the concentration camp and a lot more people (older people, kids, babies。。。) despite that, she found a life purpose with the little library she kept on a secret。 I findt it worth admiring not only for the effort she made to keep it going, also the willpower to overcome the trauma that her loved ones left on her, and that possibly still accompany her to this day。As I said, it´s a sad but incredible story that deserves to be read, so I encourage you to take a look instead of spoiling the content(: 。。。more

I found this book quite difficult to review。 On the one hand the subject matter and the fact that it is in part based on true stories and the life of Dita Kraus were interesting but the narrative switched pov too much for me and sometimes the writing was almost too matter or fact and not very engaging。 There were occasions where there seemed to be a big build up only for the actual incident to be passed over in a few sentences。 These may be translation issues though。 Incidentally I found the par I found this book quite difficult to review。 On the one hand the subject matter and the fact that it is in part based on true stories and the life of Dita Kraus were interesting but the narrative switched pov too much for me and sometimes the writing was almost too matter or fact and not very engaging。 There were occasions where there seemed to be a big build up only for the actual incident to be passed over in a few sentences。 These may be translation issues though。 Incidentally I found the part at the end which gave information about the real people the most interesting part。 。。。more

I saw a lot of reviews saying that compared to other books about the holocaust, this one just didn't catch their attention。 I had a completely different experience with this book。 It was an easy read。 This was in part, due to it being told more like a novel than a memoir。 I could not put the book down, at all。 I read it in an entire day and my obsession with it lasted for the rest of the week。 It didn't sugarcoat the story, which is the most important thing (in my opionon) for a book about the H I saw a lot of reviews saying that compared to other books about the holocaust, this one just didn't catch their attention。 I had a completely different experience with this book。 It was an easy read。 This was in part, due to it being told more like a novel than a memoir。 I could not put the book down, at all。 I read it in an entire day and my obsession with it lasted for the rest of the week。 It didn't sugarcoat the story, which is the most important thing (in my opionon) for a book about the Holocaust。 。。。more

No holocaust literary work will ever be able to make the inexplicable understandable。 It’s too much to comprehend。 Books like this, however, definitely bring the atrocities to light which is admirable in and of itself。 I admire this particular author’s attempt。 I just felt there were too many tangents to keep the flow of the story。 It centered on Dita but she for me wasn’t portrayed as the center figure。 Once again, because of all the other interwoven stories。 Ultimately it’s worth the read just No holocaust literary work will ever be able to make the inexplicable understandable。 It’s too much to comprehend。 Books like this, however, definitely bring the atrocities to light which is admirable in and of itself。 I admire this particular author’s attempt。 I just felt there were too many tangents to keep the flow of the story。 It centered on Dita but she for me wasn’t portrayed as the center figure。 Once again, because of all the other interwoven stories。 Ultimately it’s worth the read just not as a literary masterpiece。 FYI only。 。。。more

While The Librarian of Auschwitz was a good book, there’s a lot of the writing style that feels like it’s been lost through translation (literally)。 The sudden switch in POVs was really unexpected and it made it just a bit harder to understand。

The story is great and the descriptions are ground breaking, however I feel that the way it is written is not as engaging。 It could be me but I feel that such a powerful story could use a more engaging way of writing。

Based on the true story of Dita Kraus, a 14 year old girl from Prague, who becomes the Librarian of Auschwitz。 This was extremely dangerous as the Nazi’s had banned books and possession of a book was punished by death。 Well written and engaging it shows us how people presevered through one one the darkest times in human history。

Words fail me。 I can’t express the sadness I feel for all the suffering described here。 I know it’s a fictional account but nevertheless I’m sure it’s near the truth。
